Urminder’s approach to the practice of law is the product of an unusual interdisciplinary career spanning accounting, finance, entrepreneurship, and law. Born in Punjab, India, and raised in London, Glasgow, and Washington, D.C., he learned early to examine problems from multiple cultural and intellectual perspectives. He studied business administration, economics, and organizational behavior at the University of Maryland where his capstone project involved a comprehensive strategic audit of Digital Equipment Corporation. His takeaway from this project was the importance of understanding how the interconnected parts of a complex organization influence one another. He later earned a Master of Accountancy from George Washington University where he analyzed the motivations behind Japanese venture capital investments in the U.S. and, separately, the impact of various tax reform proposals on the real estate equity syndication industry. After several years of professional work at The Great Bay Company, a Boston syndicator, and the Washington, D.C. offices of Grant Thornton, an international accounting and advisory firm, he earned his law degree from Howard University School of Law.
After beginning his legal career, Urminder co-founded a technology startup in the foodservice industry, where he helped assemble funding, technology, distribution partners, and their customers to launch an innovative multi-distributor ordering platform. Although the venture was ultimately overtaken by the collapse of the dot-com market, the experience gave him firsthand insight into the realities of building, financing, operating, and managing a startup under rapidly changing conditions.
Over more than three decades of legal practice, he has represented individuals, entrepreneurs, inventors, investors, startups, established companies, and multinationals in corporate and commercial transactions, litigation, intellectual property, employment, trusts and estates, bankruptcy, securities, business and investment immigration, and other complex legal matters.
Rather than viewing these disciplines as separate silos, Urminder integrates them into a single cognitive framework that informs his legal judgment. His background in law, forensic and financial accounting, strategic auditing, startup development, equity syndication, venture finance, and complex business operations enables him to recognize and balance legal and economic risks, relationships, value and opportunities that are often overlooked when matters are viewed through a single professional lens. This integrated perspective has proven valuable not only to his own clients but also to other attorneys who have retained him in a broad spectrum of particularly challenging matters requiring creative analysis, strategic judgment, and multidisciplinary problem-solving.
